Self-driving on Indian roads.

Feasibility depends on the road, the operating conditions and evidence from testing.

Define the pilot first.

A useful starting point is a specific route with clear limits. The following is a scoping checklist for a proposed pilot.

Questions to answer before a controlled trial
AreaDefine
RoadRoute boundaries, junctions and road access.
ConditionsTraffic types, lighting, weather and speed limits.
OperationWho supervises, when the trial stops and how help arrives.
EvidenceTest cases, failures, interventions and review criteria.
PermissionsSite consent, vehicle requirements and applicable approvals.

ArcEight’s current work.

We are developing road-data tools, camera perception, sensor fusion and onboard GPU software. Our SDKs are available in POCs. Integration and controlled-site trials are the next stage of the programme. Explore our technology.

Questions.

Short answers to common questions.

Reviewed

Can self-driving cars work in India?

Feasibility must be assessed for a defined route and set of conditions. Mixed traffic, road variation and unpredictable movement create testing challenges. A limited trial needs evidence before its results can be applied to wider roads.

Why does Indian road data matter?

Local data helps cover traffic and road conditions that a system may encounter in India. The India Driving Dataset includes unstructured roads and varied road users. A model still needs evaluation on its intended routes.

Is ADAS self-driving?

ADAS means advanced driver assistance systems. Level 1 and Level 2 features assist the driver, who must supervise and remain responsible for driving. NHTSA explains the automation levels.

What is an operational design domain?

An operational design domain, or ODD, defines the conditions where a driving system is intended to operate. It can include roads, locations, speed and weather. Read the SAE AVSC guidance.

Can a prototype use public roads?

Public-road use is subject to vehicle approval and other applicable rules. Each proposed trial needs its permissions reviewed. ArcEight has not announced approval for driverless public-road operation. See Motor Vehicles Act, section 110B.

Will Pod 1 drive itself?

Autonomous travel is part of Pod 1’s design ambition. The vehicle is at concept stage. Driving capability, safety performance and road approval require development and validation. Read the Pod 1 programme details.

Can we propose a pilot?

Yes. Share the site, route, intended use and available infrastructure. We can discuss the scope, data needs and evaluation requirements. Propose a controlled-site pilot.
