Sensor fusion for vehicles.
Combine sensor measurements into a shared view of the road.

What each sensor measures.
| Sensor | Useful measurements | Check during testing |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | Colour, texture and visual object features. | Lighting, glare, blur and blocked views. |
| Radar | Distance and relative speed. | Object separation, reflections and coverage. |
| Lidar | Distance measurements that form a 3D view. | Weather, coverage and sensor cleanliness. |
Sensor choice depends on the task and operating conditions. NXP explains the sensor roles.
Scope a sensor-fusion POC.
Share sensor models, mounting positions, timestamps, sample recordings and the intended route. Agree the objects to track, acceptable delay and test cases. Define how errors and missed detections will be measured.
ArcEight Sensor Fusion SDK is available in POCs. Hardware compatibility and evaluation scope are agreed for each project.

Short answers to common questions.
Reviewed
What is sensor fusion in a car?
Sensor fusion combines measurements from multiple sensors to estimate the surrounding scene. A system can use those estimates to track vehicles and other road users. See a vehicle sensor-fusion example.
Link to answerWhy combine a camera and radar?
A camera provides visual features; radar measures distance and relative speed. Combining their measurements can add useful information for tracking. Performance depends on integration and testing. Read NXP’s explanation.
Link to answerWhat is sensor calibration?
Calibration measures sensor properties and the relationships between sensors. It helps place measurements in a shared coordinate system. Read the MathWorks calibration guide.
Link to answerWhy do timestamps matter?
Sensors can observe the same moving object at different times. The system needs capture times and a timing strategy to align those measurements before combining them.
Link to answerWhat do GPUs do?
GPUs can process many calculations in parallel, including perception models and image processing. ArcEight’s onboard-compute work includes measuring latency, power use and system health.
Link to answerDoes fusion work in rain or dust?
Weather and sensor obstruction can reduce measurement quality. A system must be tested under its intended conditions and handle degraded inputs. Sensor fusion alone does not establish safe driving performance.
